Mike Mullins (B.A. I.Eng.M.I.C.E.) – Engineer
Mike has recently retired as a team leader for the Environment Agencies Flood Defence Team in Hampshire. His career in flood defence spanned a total of 35 years commencing with Southern Water and leading to his position in the EA. Twenty five of those years were spent in the team leader role.
During this time Mike has witnessed a huge change in the way that bank revetment works are carried out. The old style piled revetments were acknowledged to be not only ugly but also counter to the conservation aims which have rightly gained momentum in recent years. Mike also worked on the original flood alleviation scheme for the Hermitage Stream in 1977.
Mike has been at the forefront of perfecting new methodologies which maintained the structural integrity of banks whilst retaining vegetated front margins. In this he worked closely with conservation teams from the Environment Agency, Hampshire & IOW Wildlife Trust and Natural England.
Mike’s river restoration experience has also been valued in his leading role in the Newport Rivers Group on the Isle of Wight and also the recent New Forest Life Project where 9km of streams have been restored for the benefit of forest ecology.
